Getting OpenOffice for free is amazing,

I agree its great stuff - I have sent out that opensource CD for free apps that works in windows to give MSFT friends a stepping stone to other alternatives:

theopencd.org

Remember bill gates said all through the 80's its not about the computer, hardware or the OS - its about the apps - I sent this to my beatles friend who is a programmer himself but he only programs in delphi for windows - him and his wife bought a new dell and paid for MSoffice - 300 bucks more - I said FOO - I sent you the opencd that gives you openoffice for FREE - why you PAYING MSFT sucka - he said he only wants the BEST for his house - no opensource crap on his machines - HUH? I cant relate to his mentality. There is a lot of memeshare to overcome still.

If goog can provide the better apps - the apps king will win in the end. I think gates understands this very well. The future with all of us on cell/phone pda apps connecting to the net through them and doing our micropayments stuff - MSFT is not getting themselves positioned properly.

But for the rest -- it's a market matter. I *bought* the scanner, and it only comes with drivers for Windows. You are simply wrong when you say people wouldn't buy them

Did I say that? I know many people that want to PAY for linux quickbooks - its not there to buy - you think that is because of lack of demand? heck no So you go to sourceforge and try to find free programs that are similar to quickbooks and try to add some help - I can throw money at any monkey - but it takes a passionate learned programmer to write code eh?

I wanted to buy other products for Linux but they aren't available

And they never will be!! - that is what I am saying - you have to take the initiative - and not in money - in time and effort and learning - stop thinking in terms of money - think in other terms.

When critical mass arrives it will become a relevant market for those big players.

MSFT is going to see to it anyway they can critical mass does NOT arrive - so you got to stop playing thier game and go somewhere else - you will not win a money war against MSFT - they have more and can come and buy up thier competitor or pay off the right crooks in congress. However if you are beyond MONEY - and just want to break their backs and write free code to subvert thier power - their tricks of MONEY will not be so powerful eh? We need more people that think their time is BEST spent in this way.

And sure I could write drivers for Linux. But I have far more relevant things to do with my time at this stage of my life. I'm glad other don't <g>

I know many opensource programmers that have contributed to sourceforge - and they are growing weary is the point I am making to you - they are tired of being no paid monkey boys. They see benwood sipping that fine wine, sleeping with that nice blonde on the yacht while they slave away in MATRIX land with circles under thier eyes and are getting tired. hehe
