which has RAW support for my new camera

There are plugins for raw support for some cameras with gimp. I know I've got something that handles the Canon cr2 format.

I use a BSD variant on the 5 machines (5 different architectures) in my office. The laptop i386 box dual boots to XP. I need that to load maps into my GPS. Were it not for the GPS I could get buy without it. The only down side is I can't access flash only web sites as flash is not available for the OS/architectures I use as desktop machines. I don't know, that may be a good thing.

I see no reason to use MS software on servers. It will take a long time before this is true for the desktop for reasons such as your scanner, proprietary hardware with drivers that are only supplied in binary form for windows, and missing features such as flash.
