can't I choose to have a private telephone conversation without arbitrary, warrantless government intrusion?

Did I ever suggest that you shouldn't?

The government would say in both cases that they are intervening to protect you (and society) from yourself or others. I can't reconcile why one is right and the other wrong.

Say what????

It's the federal government's primary function, some might say sole function, to protect us from others.

Where in the Constitution does it authorize the Feds to protect us from ourselves? Quite the opposite. Our founding fathers were quite clear about the avoiding an domineering and intrusive federal government. Not only is there no authorization to protect us from ourselves, it seems to me downright unamerican.
