I've restored images of XP OS in the past with no issues. When windows suddenly decided my copy of XP was not legitimate, I could not boot into Windows. So I restored to a recently made image that preceded the problem. Still no boot with the same error message. It was a Powerquest DI image, BTW.

Googling the error message alerted me to the fact that it was an activation issue. The fix looked complicated, and some reported that it hadn't worked for them. I decided to spend the time reinstalling the OS from scratch rather than puzzle out the problem. Like I said, I had other issues (that were also on the images I could restore to) that would be solved by a fresh install of SP2.

Like the cow suggested, I made various images (using DriveImage XML) very soon after installing SP2. These should precede any activation issues because they were made before I activated. I plan to archive these, just in case.
