Hi z; I think that the FDA should list dyes made from animals differently from "artificial dyes" so that vegans can avoid them, but I really don't find anything unappetizing about them. They're just another chemical, this one happens to be obtained efficiently from insects.

If they actually had to list them as "insect derived", I bet that the chemists / biologists would find a way of moving the gene to a plant so that the chemical could be produced that way.

Carmine is among the most stable of all food, drug and cosmetic colors. This property is primarily the result of the anthraquinone structure of carminic acid.

At the present time, there is a resurgence in demand for carmine cochineal due, in part, to reports that synthetic dyes produce alergic reactions, and because there is a worldwide desire to use products free of artificial additives (Portillo 1992). Because of the great importance that cochineal is again taking on, there is renewed interest in Mexico in producing this insect. However, the presence of natural enemies in some places makes it necessary to recognize the importance of this organism in cochineal cultivation (Portillo and Vigueras 1998b).

The only way to know what is in your food is to grow it yourself. Bugs don't bother me. The are highly nutritious. Rodent droppings bother me much more. Besides, I don't like boysenberry. <G>
