Hawk....."What about all of the moderate voices of Islam who have been snuffed out and silenced by these fanatic militants because we FAILED to play a role in assisting them to defeat the organized violence being perpetrated against them?".....

Agreed, Moderate islam is being silenced by the crazies and is the reason why I said the following...."This is not just a few bad guys,,, it may have started out that way but not now. Now there could be millions upon millions of radical islamics.".....

And we the " west " failed to assist them.... I don't know if it could be called a failure on our part. Our societies have been taught " freedom of Religion " and we did as we were taught to do and not interfere with another countries religion or culture even to the point of permitting other cultures to come to our societies and maintain their own cultures and religious ways and I suppose we could say that our Freedom of religion could be seen by radical islam as a weakness of democratic and free societies and something to be used against us. So I wonder at what point should the free world have interfered in the islam culture. Did 9/11 have to happen to convince us that we had to at last fight back against a violent religious culture? To this day President Bush states that islam is a culture/religion of peace yet it is that same culture/religion that we the free world are fighting to change.

...."The reason militancy is on the rise is because the Islamic world LAGS BEHIND, economically, politically, and ideologically, the rest of the world."....

Agreed. and I would add education to that list and IMO the reason for lagging behind is the islam culture and it's teachings. So I think that islam has to change from within but just how to convince them that change is needed??? Be nice guys...freedom of religion or tough guys and force change?

...."Our task is to encourage and energize the moderate and democratic voices in the world so that they can defeat the totalitarian militant forces that seek to intimidate and oppress them."....

Agreed. But how? which is the best way?
