There are solutions elmat, but they have to make sense regarding laws of thermodynamics and the simple idea of energy in energy out..if the total tally.. i mean total cost of energy being used to produce oil from tars sands for example, is greater than what you get out...what is the point?

All the drum beating and table pounding will not change this...look at the foolishness about the hydrogen economy that continues to stream out of companies that should know..GM for example...all the evidence seems to point to the fact that it just costs too much to produce hydrogen, compress and transport and then dispense it except for a narrow band of applications..this forklift for indoor use for example.

I was surprised that Bush hardly mentioned the "hydrogen economy"last night.. maybe he has better advisors<g>

Will there be a major breakthrough regarding hydrogen...place your bet.. so far all the evidence points to a dead end.Maybe Honda will come up with a brea k through solution.

As to ethanol, how far can we run with that?It comes down to arable land and the use of land that the article suggests...there is a limited supply..and we are paving over it , eroding it and abusing it at an alarming rate..plus the ongoing stress of feeding ourselves. Jay put up this web site here..

cia.gov

have a look at the arable land percentages for countries of the world.. then have a look at the updated version in 5 or 10 years time...i can assure you it won't be increasing.

Getting ourselves as efficient as possible in everything we do first, and then solar wind and wave power along with the recapture of energy in the every day things we use ...dynamic braking of cars, locomotives, elevators, forklifts conveyors....falling sewer water and rain water from buildings and insulating everything to R 100..America is in position to lead the way as Bush suggested last night..end of rant<gg>
