Of course. But we are alive now, and for most of us, the next 50 years will represent the bulk, if not the totality, of our remaining lifetime. The fact that a situation can resolve itself without any effort over the next century is useful only for the history books.

Then why are we invading, occupying and bombing the shit out of them today? Take the $300Billion and subsidize energy efficiency NOW, and it will probably take a lot less than 50 years.

Not to mention the side benefits... all the money wasted by energy inefficiency gets reinvested into our economy, the trade deficit (currently ~1/3 oil) gets reduced.
