DJ W Va Gov Orders All Mines In State To Stop Production

We protect our workers though eh? How can mines go up in value if they are shut down by the gubbment?
.

DRAWDY, W.Va. (AP)--Gov. Joe Manchin ordered Wednesday all mines in the state to cease production until safety checks can be conducted.

His decision follows the deaths of two people in separate mine site accidents in Boone County earlier in the day. The accidents bring the state's death total to 16 within a one-month period.

"We're going to check for unsafe conditions, and we're going to correct any unsafe conditions before we mine another lump of coal," Manchin said.

Caryn Gresham, a spokeswoman for the state's Office of Miners' Health Safety and Training said one miner was killed after a mine support popped loose at the Long Branch Energy underground mine in the Wharton area.

The accident was reported shortly before noon.

A spokesman for the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration said a bulldozer operator was killed during a gas fire at a surface mine in the Drawdy area of Boone County around 2 p.m. or 2:30 p.m. EST.

Dirk Fillpot said the fire ignited after the dozer struck a gas line at the Elk Run Black Castle surface mine. Elk Run is a subsidiary of Richmond, Va.-based Massey Energy Co. (MEE).

In addition to MSHA, officials with the state Office of Miners' Health Safety and Training are also on the scene.

Gresham said there was a third accident at an underground mine in Kanawha County on Wednesday. No details about that incident have been released.
