It seems like you're throwing a monkey wrench into this illustration just to throw a monkey wrench. It's just an example of taking away vs giving less. It's supposed to illustrate that key point. That there are other variables suggested by the example is a extraneous. You could just as easily fuss at me for giving her less because she's a woman or for eating the same thing every day. None of that has anything to do with what is being discussed.

In any event, since you brought it up, what makes you think that a buck fifty is less than fifteen percent? A buck fifty is a respectable tip for a five dollar tuna sandwich. Or how do you know it wasn't a buffet, where a fifteen percent tip isn't expected?

I don't see the point of arguing extraneous elements of an example.
