Now who's being naive. The event has become political theater by both sides. Else why would the President stage appearances by military personnel and other heroes? This year was a first; throwing a bone to dog lovers. Pretty soon we'll have a whole menagerie of animals, as politicians appeal to the cat contingent, the bird contingent, even the ferret contingent... It has become very little about the actual state of the union and more about a opportunity for free exposure for the President (and, to a lesser degree, the loyal opposition). Blame TV. Blame opportunistic politician handlers like Rove. Blame advertisers and cable news channels. Don't blame me - I didn't make it what it is.
