I agree. That article impressed me with how well written it was and with its clarity. I thought, however, the writer was a bit naive about the level of heat such academic warfare routinely generates. Happens a lot. You would have thought, from reading this particular article, that is was rare.

I'm not surprised that researchers get sufficiently heated they won't appear on panels together or, I gather from the last paragraph, even plan to attend conferences if they opposing person/group is present.

Just as long as the basic article refereeing process sticks to methodology and not conclusions, we'll be ok.
