I've watched the growing conflicts at the FDA with more than a little alarm.

I know what you mean. But that conflict is both visible and non-scientific (political). Their steering the politics is different from them compromising the underlying science. We may have to live with the political results, a ban on something or other that would be helpful, but I don't think that they can get away with hiding the banning or the support for the product. Besides professional civil-servant scientists in the agencies, we have professional scientists on advisory boards. They can't suppress the science even if they can ban the product.
