Given that we should go one direction or the other

I don't see that as a given. We could change the patchwork without going to some almost pure capitalist, or almost pure socialist system.

Also if we do move in one direction or the other we don't have to go all the way. We could have more government involvement without a single payer system. We could also have a more free market solution without junking government involvement.
