I wasn't the only one to mention that they planned all along to jump the gun. I know there were at least two of us who guessed.

Good guess, but that's not the only plan they had. No good manager isn't going to have a plan b or plan c for that matter. It's quite possible the 1 year timeframe was the plan b, and they were always gunning for a 6 month release. Apple doesn't announce products that are delayed, so it looks like they're always advancing and moving ahead.

On the other hand, Microsoft always announces, even vaporware, and seems like it's always pushing back deadlines. There's good reason for what both of these companies are doing. Apple is the innovator always wanting to surprise the marketplace and stay ahead of the compatition, so secrecy is necessary. Microsoft is the big incumbent, so by pre-announcing, they keep the competition from thinking about entering a market. Why invest in something that's just going to get squashed by Microsoft in a short time?

In reality, any plans take time to hatch out, and there's quite a bit of variability of making schedules. Development efforts don't always go as planned, sometimes, things piece together nicely, other times, you get wrinkles that don't get ironed out for years. Somewhere in the middle, a product has to be released (i.e. Mathematica UB).

Additionally, if Apple had announced a 6 month target, and failed to meet it, they would be looking foolish by now. By going further out, they gave themselves a buffer, and this time, they didn't have to use it. Next time, they might.
