That is not the risk of return on labor.

You labored X hours. Unless the company goes under you are very likely to be paid for those X hours. The risk is low.

The risk of getting future opportunities to provide labor in a favorable or even acceptable situation is not a risk to the return on labor. It might be a risk to the return on training and gaining skills. Usually the potential return justifies taking that risk.
