Gold has went up in price of debasing dollars from the low 5 years ago - has that gotten you more advanced medicine? Does that gold you invest in make your internet happen so you can post here? Do you see the bigger picture beyond price movements in pieces of green paper? Or is that all that concerns you - how many pieces of debasing green paper a lump of shiny metal will give you - hehe. I would rather lose my opinion than lose my wealth, but I view wealth as more knowledge spread among more people and more technology used by us all. I just cant fundamentally view a lump of shiny metal as a store of value. At the end of the world I would much rather barter you a copy of hitchhikers guide to the galaxy for your copy of another book rather than a lump of metal.

Would you prefer 10 tons of gold alone on your desert island or no gold and a net connection living in a nice city? Spain had a choice - short term luxury or long term research and development, investing in another palace - or investing in some education and science for thier citizens and spreading real wealth - thier Gold Meme and short term greed cost them - that is why you and I are speaking english here and not spanish!

The 1 and 2 year chart is not backing your investment - there were better and equal sectors - that is not to say gold was not a good investment from 5 years ago if you wanted it to go up in numbers of green pieces of paper it will bring you.

Here - you can check mutual funds from 10 years annualized, 5 year, 3 year and 1 year.

10 years seems like small caps was the play.

5 years seems like emerging markets (russia the best) and pm's.

3 years emerging markets (latin america the best)

1 year emerging markets, pm's, natural resources

3 month pm's and emerging markets

1 month pm's and emerging markets

Seems pm's have been having a run for 5 years now - aren't you supposed to buy low and sell high? Not buy at the top and hope it goes higher JNPR 2000 style? Aren't Pm's near thier top?

Here you can check stocks.

Now individual stocks are a little harder to call long term than sectors perhaps - but it seems china, energy, and medical were the plays.

I believe in bringing up emerging markets to have more knowledge and technology so they can help research all the worlds problems - I believe in energy to make all that happen, I believe in medical to make us all live longer - gold I dont believe in - it has no use to me. If my government and the others of the world get so bad the only way I can do business is to trade a shiny lump of metal for a hamburger - then the citizens of the world have failed in thier civic duty and I think we will have far greater problems than wondering where we hid the gold in the back yard.
