Zinc is about the cheapest metal there is - other than iron. It has a low melting point.

Zinc can even be injection molded. That amazes me.

So when other metals rise in price, there is an effort to increase the use of zinc or plastics as a replacement.

This can tend to pull the price of zinc up when there is a zinc shortage, and transfer shortages of other metal into demand for zinc.
