Okay, look at it this way.

You own 10,000 shares of XYZ. You decide to sell 50 calls.

If someone asks you if you have a position, the natural reply is to say "I'm short 50 March calls", no?

I would not know of another way to say it briefly, unless I said "Covered calls".

I used to sell puts against equities I wanted to own more of. Technically, I believe I was short those puts.

using the term "shorting options" is not really correct

Maybe, but I would say that's the convention. People understand what you are saying right away.

You're probably technically correct, but since I don't touch stocks and only trade the futures, I tend to use the lingo for futures... hey, nobody's perfect...
