short implies selling something before you buy something (ie short the call or short the put).

Long implies buying something before you sell it (ie long the call or long the put).

I don't have any problem with someone saying they are short calls or short puts (ie selling before buying). If they don't expire worthless, you must buy back to close your position.

It's a matter of semantics to describe the sequence of events.
