We spent years escorting tankers from kuwait through the straits past Silkworm sites. Operation Preying Mantis comes to mind. As I recall, it was no big deal

Iran also was not willing, and had no incentive, for a show-down with the US. Different ball game now.

Yes, but they weren't firing at us. If they do fire, we would go to an all out war. If we didn't, Iran could keep oil shut off in the gulf.

None of this will happen, because the Chinese and Russians won't let it.
