They tried. Aircraft from the USS Enterprise sent them to meet Davy Jones in his locker

But they obviously didn't press it. They were in the middle of an 8 year war with Iraq. We're in a different set of facts now. Iran is in the docket, and its perceived vital national interests are at stake.

What happened in the 80s was a sideshow - a scuffle. We weren't in the ring. Now we are. We'll cream them, of course. That isn't even debatable, IMO. But they'll put up a fight if it gets to blocking the Straits and overt hostilities. That's all that's required to accomplish their goal - block the flow of oil and create economic pressure to drop the pressure on them. And they have other means of giving us a headache, simultaneously.

Iran is a stickier problem than Iraq was. It's a real chess game.
