DJ US Sen McCain Seeks Boycott Of G8 Meeting In Russia-Report

.

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., has called for a boycott of a meeting of the Group of Eight leading nations to be held in St. Petersburg in June, the International Herald Tribune reported Monday.

The Paris-based newspaper said McCain made the remarks during a conference on security policy in Munich Sunday, where U.S. and European officials sharply criticized Russia for what they said was a deteriorating record on human rights.

McCain, according to the newspaper, said it was time to take Russian President Vladimir V. Putin to task over his human rights record and his moves against press freedom and against nonprofit organizations.

"I seriously question whether the G8 leaders should attend the St. Petersburg summit," McCain said at the gathering, the newspaper reported.

The IHT also quoted Sergei Ivanov, Russia's deputy prime minister and defense minister, who was also at the meeting, saying, "He has always made such statements," adding that it was McCain, not Russia, who was living in the cold war era.
