I think a lot of the present fanaticism has to do with the groupthink inherent in death cults. No one who has any doubts dares express them for fear of being branded a traitor, an infidel, an apostate, etc. Fanaticism increases as each member strives to be more in tune with the cult than the rest, and the rest follow suit.

In short, there is no one who is willing to cast doubt because not only is it dangerous, it is futile.
