Harassing your oppressor is not the same as winning your independence. And while many Americans fought "guerilla-style", the majority of battles were traditional rank and file battles where muskets were more valuable than rifles (which required additional practice and were more unwieldy in size). Now if we're going to carry the analogy a bit further, it would require that France and Spain actually assisted the Patriots to set up a democratic government. Of course, they were ambivalent, and even fearful, of democracy, but the benefit of hurting England out-weighed the risks of unleashing a new political ideal that would eventually be their downfall. But let's say that the French and Spanish had been democracies and were assisting the Patriots to develop a democratic government because it would be in their interest to increase the number of countries that shared their governmental system? And let's say they offered to form an alliance against the British empire and any remnants of their loyalist factions remaining in the colonies.... I think that would be closer to the Iraqi analogy. Listen.. not only are we facing a counter-invasion by Al Qai'da operatives and indigenous Salafist/Takfirist groups in Iraq, but we're also trying to deal with the FRE elements who wish to recapture their previous positions of power, out of fear of becoming an oppressed minority. Add on top of that the fact that neighboring countries such as Syria and Iran had permitted considerable logistical support to militants to cross their borders into Iraq, and the fact that they are profiting by promoting insurgency in Iraq, we have to realize that without US support and involvement, NO COUNTRY would be able to survive. There's been considerable outcry about interference in Iraqi affairs by the US. But MY GOD!! where's the outrage over shipping ignorant youths into Iraq to be sacrificed as "martyrs"?? Where's the outrage over Iran's harboring of Al Qai'da leaders and operatives in Iran?? Where's the outrage over Iran's interference in Shi'ite affairs, fueling the Badr Corps and Mahdi Militia?? There are a hell of lot of countries in the region "interfering".. Thus, if they think it's important enough to interfere in order to create chaos, or an Islamo-Fascist state, then maybe it might be important that we put our money and blood where our mouths are and fight for democratic government. I happen to believe there's a lot at stake here. If we permit Islamo-Fascism to take root in Iraq and control that countries population and resources, we're in a "sh*t-load" of trouble down the line.
