I think the more important answer is when to buy gold.

The answer might soon.

The price movement of gold may be rapid enough to outweigh minor price differences.

The other parts of the question are where to you want to keep it, and where and how you will sell it or trade it.

You may want to keep it somewhere your government won't or can't grab it. Having to bring gold across a border might be noted.

Having well known bullion coins or serial numbered marked from a major refiner (Credit Suisse, J&M, Englehardt) makes it much easier to sell.
