I did read it. It was a good post. It's all same old same old- happens everywhere.

I heard an interesting conversation on NPR today, it was about bigotry and religion. Basically the thrust was, when you have one dominant religion, you get everyone who doesn't agree with it killed or persecuted. When you have two, they spend their time killing each other. When you have many religions, their is enough diversity that no one gets quite enough power to put the thumbscrews to anyone else, nor is there likely to be a civil war- because there is just too much disagreement.

This conversation came up in the context of the Muslims who were rioting over the cartoons. And another good point was that when you have the hegemony of one religion, you get a lot of reinforcement. In this country when people get upset and demonstrate, you're lucky to get a few thousand, because the country is so diverse that most people aren't going to agree with you. In the ME, it was argued, it's easier to get a critical mass.
