The guy I dealt with yesterday in the Dell call center could use technical, English, and courtesy lessons

How is that different from years past and American call centers? I never had much luck in any of those departments.

The fact is that many companies find the use of Indian call centers adequate, whereas it wouldn't have been considered a number of years ago. Also, the Indian call center people are not the top tier talent; the higher talent workers work in technical development/maintenance jobs, and the highest talent comes over here.

I do concede that technology, such as satellite communication, makes it easier for India and China to compete. In talking with some Indian counterparts, they cannot lay a lot of ground wire for fear of it being dug up and sold. But, the satellite communications allow them to concentrate and guard their infrastructure.

Regardless of the cumulative reasons, India and China can now compete with us on more than just cheap labor.
