Now we have 'the never ending story (war)' with terrorist. We had to have something to fill in until China gets so powerful that we will have another cold war.

I think you're being overly optimistic in saying "nuclear war was never going to happen". Not on the WW III scale, but regional nuclear exchanges are quite possible.

War was quite possible before Iraq. Witness the Balkans. War is a condition that never goes out of style. It's almost the natural state of man.

But the end of the Cold War did make things like this possible. When the Cold War was on, either the Russians or the West would have prevented something like 911. Neither we nor they were going to take a chance on some nut starting WW III.
