Since we are in an endless "war", martial law can easily be used to put down people if they create problems. After all, you can't tolerate civil unrest that might "help the enemy". The President now has a blank check -- literally -- do anything he deems necessary for "the good of the order". I don't see anybody getting really concerned about the growing militarization of the US domestic front of this "war". The middle class will sigh with relief if the military can also quell any "domestic disturbances" that might arise if the war should drag on while the economy takes a tumble.
