I agree with you. I favor ranking risks as unemotionally as possible using logical metrics that aren't susceptible to hysteria- I'm in a minority when it comes to that, I might add.

I can remember numerous times discussing risk, and the liklihood of various kinds of deaths, and having someone in the crowd say "Yeah, you don't really care about those victims of 9/11"- which pretty much sums up my point. Caring a lot about one particular disaster, or way of dying, shouldn't influence the metric. It should be as actuarially sound as possible- and we should spend money where we prevent the greatest loss of life, and promote the best quality of life- we should not just throw excessive amounts of money at the fear du jour. JMO, of course, based on the way I like to live.
