Tim,

That blog entry made the point quiet eloquently.

The world is now full of companies designing and patenting minor software features in the hope that someday, somebody might "step" on their patent and pay them to go away rather than fight.

The biotech world is full of companies that do nothing but design and recombine proteins, all of which get patented even though most of the work doesn't represent much of a breakthrough. They do nothing with them, and they don't really have any market value in and of themselves, but the hope is that some "blockbuster drug" will come along, that happens to include (often by independent discovery) the same protein or other organic combination.
