McDonald's European same-store sales, or sales at stores open at least 13 months, were down 0.5% in January, hampered by the company's performance in the U.K. and Germany.

In the Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa region, McDonald's same-store sales were up 3.3% in January, led by strong results in Australia and China.

Systemwide sales for the month rose 4.2% on a global basis, helped by a 10.5% jump in the U.S. Sales in Europe fell 6.6% for January, while in the Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa region, systemwide sales rose 0.3%.

DJ McDonald's Jan Global Same-Store Sales Rose 5.7% >MCD

OAK BROOK, Ill. (Dow Jones)--McDonald's Corp.'s (MCD) global same-store sales rose 5.7% in January, fueled by the popularity of the company's breakfast business and core and premium menu offerings in the U.S.

In a press release Wednesday, the fast-food chain said it is "confident that 2006 will be another strong year for McDonald's."

For January, McDonald's U.S. same-store sales rose 9.7%, with the popularity of its breakfast menu, popular core and premium menu choices, extended hours, and mild January weather contributing to the results.
