I agree. I thought it amusing that pessimism was attributed to the left, when there is plenty of it on the right (Al Qaeda will "destroy" America; If the president doesn't have the power to spy on people without warrants dire things will happen; Saddam will wreak havoc with WMD's (there's an oldy)) Anyway, it's all darn depressing. Left, right and center- we all pretty much have the same problems with pessimism about our bugaboos, an inability to go beyond our underlying belief system, and a resistance to the people we see as "the other"- and in some instances, a real desire to hurt the other. Difficult to see how that's going to get better going forward, but perhaps that's my pessimism. On the optimistic front, I just received a floor washing robot from IRobot, and I must say, it's doing a fabulous job on my floor.
