Taxes aren't "transfer payments." That's the term for the government collecting taxes and then writing checks to citizens. Collecting taxes for the general welfare is another matter.

I think folk like Williams write these kinds of op ed pieces...

Certainly his point helps if you don't want the programs. I wouldn't presume to know why he chose to write it at this time. All I know is that it's an important stand-alone point. I argue points all the time simply because I think they're important on general principle and may not have been considered critically. And because there are some whoppers I can't just let be. Same reason I argued generalization vs stereotype. My argument was independent of the context.

The existence of government depends on its power to collect taxes, not any real or perceived right to do so.
