Taxes aren't "transfer payments." That's the term for the government collecting taxes and then writing checks to citizens. Collecting taxes for the general welfare is another matter. I think folk like Williams write these kinds of op ed pieces... Certainly his point helps if you don't want the programs. I wouldn't presume to know why he chose to write it at this time. All I know is that it's an important stand-alone point. I argue points all the time simply because I think they're important on general principle and may not have been considered critically. And because there are some whoppers I can't just let be. Same reason I argued generalization vs stereotype. My argument was independent of the context.
