There is no doubt that transfer payments will come to eat us alive the way we are going -- testimony to two things we do extremely poorly: pay for health care and save for retirement. But the broader point is my concern: no country in the modern world can thrive without good government, and we don't have good government.

"I was simply pointing out to you how much less of our national income we spend on defense now as opposed to a time that many would point to as peaceful."

You mentioned the year 1954. This was just after the end of the Korean war. Not exactly a time that many considered "peaceful".

en.wikipedia.org

"The Korean War, from June 25, 1950 to cease-fire on July 27, 1953 (the war has not ended officially), was a conflict between North Korea and South Korea."
