As if paying dividends were itself a natural act.

Of course it's natural. Investors expect a return on their investment. Until we got into this go-go capital-gains-only world, dividends were expected. They were the purpose of investment. Remember, your penny a quarter? The whole thing falls apart if investors don't get a return. Interest and dividends are two very natural ways to frame returns. Both are the sort of things that, if they didn't exist, someone would invent them. Like gifts on Valentine's Day. Or spectator sports. And betting on spectator sports. All natural. Giving dividends to workers is about as natural as giving chocolates instead of medals at the Olympics.
