It isn't that it will increase the tax base so much as it will increase the reelection chances of those doing the confiscation and redistribution.

Once you give government the power to take personal property for the "public good", that power will always be for sale by politicians. The "public good" can be redefined to fit whatever whim.

Years ago here, in Baltimore, the public voted to take property around the harbor to build Harbor Place. Harbor Place is just a very nice shopping center. I voted against it even though one could say it helped reclaim the downtown from urban decay and has delivered most of the positive benefits that its backers promised. The fact that a majority of voters could simply trample over the property rights of individuals is patently offensive to me.
