"The value of goods manufactured in the US continues to increase, we get dips every time there is a recession but the long term trend continues up." As a percentage of the economy they don't. And you love percentages, don't you? There are whole sectors that we no longer participate in. We used to lead in shipbuilding, mining and other areas. Heck, we more or less invented steelworking and the auto industry. But we dominate it no longer. We haven't exceeded the rate of inflation for manufacturing in decades.
