Ignorance begets ignorance. Poverty begets poverty.

It has always seemed to me that the ignorance, not the poverty, is the salient factor. I would change that to "ignorance begets poverty and poverty begets ignorance." Poverty can be overcome; ignorance not so much. That's part of why I think it not particularly useful to just give poor people money.
