Tim, I thought that treating people with decency was something that should be automatic, even though that is not the case these days. I didn't equate that with respect, but just as the proper way to treat all of the people, regardless of color, national origin, religion, or ethnic customs. Sadly, you have pointed out that such decency is no longer a given. Now, if some one, or group, of humans decide to attack us, or our nation, it is difficult to maintain such decency. When a bullet is sent your way, it is natural for you to send bullets back at them.

The serious respect should be held for those that are good people, and those that have given of themselves for the good of mankind, which can be shown by many different things one might do, such as invention, leadership, fairly won high station in life, maintaining the truth, etc.

You understand the nature of respect better than 95% or more of our population. You are exactly right when you said "a certain level of respect doesn't have to be earned." Humans deserve a minimum level of respect just because they are alive and because they think.

I also agree with your statement that " The type of respect that would normally cause someone to say 'I respect you' has to be earned."

You have earned my respect for many reasons.
