Read William O'Neill's short selling book this weekend. He goes into a number of classic topping pattern charts, and it's revealing how long these tops often take to form, unless there is a climax top (railroad tracks). Most of the obvious names we look at, tend to be more developing formations.

As we have learned the hard way, often the first high volume breaks have been used by the Pig Men and Bully to conduct run ins of the bears. The pattern O'Neill looks for are stalling wedging actions, with 2-4 rally attempts through the 50 MA on the right shoulder. He also looks for wide, loose, improper late stage bases with a handle. Finally these stocks if they are to be shorted, break through the 50 MA on high vol, after the last rally fails on low vol.

Think a stock like CCL here fits the mold.

One to track for an entry? May need a feeble rally attempt or two?

They have some expensive software called Canslim that monitors these formations. Maybe if someone reading has access, save us a lot of chart reading?
