Agreed. I'm almost to the point of thinking we need a Democrat in the White House next go around just to bring this country a little closer to center again from the far right where it's been sitting for 5 years now. Anyway, if the Republicans come up with another stooge this next go round, I'll vote Democrat again for only the second time in my life.

At first I was glad Bush was in the White House after 9/11, because I didn't think Democrats grasped the danger we faced. Now I'm pretty sure Democrats grasp the danger and I'm also pretty sure they have better ideas on how to solve the problems as well. We'll never get to energy independence with Republicans in the White House. They are too much in bed with the rich people in this country. We need the Democrats from the old days, the anti-establishment ones, to come to power and drag the whole damn country kicking and screaming towards energy independence.

I say what we need to do is to pick a technology like flex-fuel engines that can run on 100% ethanol, 100% gase, or any mixture of the two, and make it a legal requirement that all engines produced in this country have to be flex-fuel. Then we tax the shit out of gas and use the proceeds to fund companies willing to produce ethanol and build the delivery mechanisms all the way to upgrades to gas stations to carry ethanol.

That alone coule get us to reduce our oil consumption by 75% within 10 years. We produce 5 million barrels per day of oil domestically and we consume 20 million. So a reduction by 75% of our consumption would mean we'd be free of the Middle East. Brazil has shown us the way.

Now picture this. Then for the next ten years, let's mandate that every car is a plug-in, hybrid, flex-fuel. That would really get our consumption down. With most other countries following our lead, the world's consumption of oil would whither, reducing the middle east terrorists to paupers again.

That's the platform I'd run on, if I were a Democrat. I'd say let's fight this war smarter. Any Democrat that runs on a platform of there is no war to fight will lose. So the Democrats need to pick a topic that EVERYONE but Bush and Cheney agree on. GET US OFF THE OIL.
