J Croatian Coca-Cola Factory Workers' Strike Illegal -Court

.

ZAGREB, Croatia (AP)--A Zagreb district court ruled Friday a workers' strike at a Coca-Cola Co. (KO) factory in Croatia is illegal, urging protesters to disperse and resume normal production.

Judge Slavko Pavkovic said protesters - who blocked entry into the factory 10 days ago - were violating labor laws.

The managers of Coca-Cola Beverages Croatia - owned by the Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Co. SA (EEEK.AT), based in Athens, Greece - took strikers to court after their action virtually halted local production and distribution.

About 250 striking employees - one-third of those at the factory - went on strike to demand a 10% raise in wages, now at about 3,000 kuna (EUR408) a month. They also insist the 123 workers, mainly drivers, who are to be dismissed get better severance packages than promised by the company.

The company insisted their severance offer was fair.

Marijan Sokacic, head of the Croatian Coca-Cola union, said they will decide later whether they would end the strike, or appeal the court's ruling.

Judge Pavkovic said the strike began before negotiations with the factory managers were completed, the strikers didn't formally announce it and unlawful means are being used. He also said the strike violated the labor law by preventing other workers from doing their job.
