"If the press did not break the story on Bush's eavesdropping, the story might never have come to light. Such abuse of power must be at least scrutinized, brought to light, debated, and weighed on its merits - not possible if kept in a dark closet. Liberties are hard fought treasures; the theft of these treasures must be exposed."

1) There is a general agreement that it is ok for our government to engage in covert surveilance of our enemiy's operations, right?
2) There is no clear agreement that what has happened recently was an abuse of power. I have seen only politicians positioning themselves and partisan bickering over the issue.
3) If we want our government to engage in surveilance of enemy operations, then it is a contradiction to say that we also want to 'bring it to light', 'scrutinize' the details publicly, 'debate' the operations in public.

If we agree on 1, we can discuss the policies and guidelines of the legalities at the governance level, but we should not be exposing the details of classified operations to get at that discussion.

>>>Bush is being given a free ride compared to Clinton. Clinton lied about having an affair. Just yesterday, the Bush administration was potentially caught in three lies that have an actual impact on our safety and liberty:<<<

Remember, the initial investigation into Clinton involved Whitewater. If anyone's interested, do a word count in Ken Starr's final report and see how many times the term "Whitewater" is mentioned. To save you the work, do know it was barely mentioned at all.
