re: let me see, today it is snowing in Denver and I saw 5 wrecks and few close calls and all that while driving my 4.5 miles to work. But I felt fairly safe in my SUV with SH-AWD, VSA and anti-lock breaks. Nicely avoided collision right in front of me.

Subaru makes some nice 4X4's that get decent mileage. And with a $7K credit for over 32 MPG, I bet a lot of auto companies would figure a way to meet your needs.

Actually there are a lot of laws against smoking.

But to your point... I don't propose a law against LOW MILEAGE VEHICLES, just a tax that partially pays what their inefficiency costs the rest of us. You can have your SUV, just pay your fare share of the consequential cost of gasoline.
