oh, my gosh! Rudi, countrybob just told me the story!! I remember now....it was so long ago I forgot !!! <ggg> But must have only watched it a few times, or I would have remembered about grasshopper..... (Thanks cb!) Here's what one site said: Why is Caine called "grasshopper"? This question comes up every single week in the Search. One can only assume it is being asked by people who never saw the pilot in which the very first time Caine meets Master Po, he says that to be blind must be the worst affliction. But Master Po shows the young Caine that he can even hear the grasshopper at the young Caine's feet, which Caine couldn't hear.

Looking back, I think it was one of those shows where you had to read between the lines. When he was in the desert and living off the land, what was he eating? PEYOTE BUTTONS, that's what! Next thing, he's hallucinating! That bag of herbs he carried around.....was it for eating or for smoking? He'd hit the herbs, and next thing you know, BANG, his head is back in China, listening to a one stringed guitar! You gotta remember, this was the old west! All these Chinamen hung out in opium dens and only opened Chinese laundries to launder drug money! One hit of that opium and it's flashback city! Right back to China, talking to grasshoppers.....that talk back!
