There is a graph on this web page,

en.wikipedia.org

of the Variations in CO2, temperature and dust from the Vostok ice core over the last 400 000 years

It shows periodic peaks slowly dropping to lows with all closely coordinated.

Peak temperatures are about 3 degrees C, peak CO2 levels are about 280 PPM and peak dust at about 1.5 parts/million.

The CO2 levels coordinate almost exactly with the temperature, There have been 5 peaks of CO2 in the 460000 years covered by the Ice Core. The dust while not quite as consistent, coordinates closely with the CO2/temperature lows. I think if you are interested in a good read of the Ice ages, this article is the best I have found on the Internet.

An interesting point is that we are at a natural CO2 peak in the cycle that the graph shows, and we are now 80 ppm higher than at any time in the past 460,000 years, and it is rising at a rate of 4 ppm/year. It is interesting to note that the CO2 started its present peak about 12,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age. The next major ice age is due in about 90,000 years should the pattern of the graph continue.

Slag, being an engineer/scientist I'm a causal relations fan club member. There's no magic. If there is, I haven't found it yet. So, the dreaded "greenhouse effect" is just a bunch of activity to be followed to see what is really going on.

The scientifically illiterate can get a grip on the idea that CO2 is increasing and that causes warming and therefore, we have an answer = we are going to get really hot.

They can add to that the idea of ocean currents coming to a halt causing localized freezing and maybe therefore a global ice age.

But you never hear them talk about the oceanic crust, subduction and what happens to all the beasties involved. Without thinking it through, they are Gaia fan club members. They think Earth loves us, if only we will be nice to it. They can't imagine that Gaia is actually suicidal and happy to take us with it unless we yank the reins and put a stop to the MADness.

It makes much more sense that we are the super amazing special beings with finely honed minds which are specifically put here to take charge of ignorant nature. One doesn't need to be superstitious or religious to think something is going on and that we seem to be part of it in a big way and we had better do something about it or suffer the consequences.
