That's interesting because we weren't discussing GDP; GDP was not at the base of the ratio set up by the article......the original point was that 40% of Russia's national income, not its GDP

A countries budget isn't its national income.

GDP, GNP and GVA (Gross Value Added) are measures of the national income. They use different methodologies but the figures are normally pretty close, they could be a few percent different perhaps but not vastly different.

So once the claim that the percent of our national income that goes to defence is 20%, is not only wrong, but very wrong and the claim that it is headingto 40% is just silly.
