It's like the story about the frog slowly boiling, starting from cold, unaware of the change [I am not convinced that frogs are so stupid and am not going to conduct an experiment]. There is a good example to study. New Zealand 50 years ago was top of the pops in GDP per capita and by any measure of lifestyle [give or take a bit and some material possessions notwithstanding], especially when quality of life was included. I think NZ was about number 3 on Earth. Over the decades, we have slowly sunk down the rankings, though in absolute terms, people are better off here [murders, robberies and general social mayhem notwithstanding]. Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Spain, Italy, Ireland and other countries were pitiful by comparison. Over a few short decades, NZ has been left far behind in many ways. Hong Kong now has much more wealth per capita, as does Singapore. Kiwis used to go shopping in those places and pay for their airfares with the savings. Now, we make beds for wealthy tourists from around the world, even including China for God's sake [peace be upon him, and me too, come to think of it, but a different kind of peace than eternal peace]. Americans will do the same as Kiwis = gradually sink into the morass of 6 or 7 billion people all battling to earn a living and buy stuff they want and stop others taking it from them by force. Or, they might manage to avoid the biggest mistakes and remain pre-eminent [not that they are in various measures, such as freedom and GDP per capita]. Interesting that ascorbic acid is now Made in China. It used to be really expensive. Yet it should cost almost nothing given the processes required. Mqurice
